Before E85, a better question: what does each mile really cost?

Would E85 work on the journeys you actually make?

Before imagining a cheaper journey, identify where its fuel would come from. A conversion cannot create a convenient supply route, and a lower price abroad is not a delivered UK price. Start with the car you own, the driving you do and a supplier you could actually use. Those details make an E85 question concrete enough to take to a specialist.

There are UK suppliers of E85 and specialists offering flex-fuel work. That does not establish a convenient national retail network or a saving on your regular journeys. Before considering equipment, find an actual supplier you can use, check the fuel specification and work out the price per litre including tax, delivery and any collection journey. A racing-fuel listing is not the same as a roadside pump price.

E10, E85 and LPG are different decisions.

GOV.UK explains that standard UK petrol is E10, while E5 remains available in the super grade. An engine being suitable for E10 does not demonstrate that it can use a high-ethanol blend. Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s fuel specification; do not try E85 in an ordinary petrol car to see what happens.

LPG is another fuel and another conversion system. Its installation prices, fuel network and cost calculations cannot be used as evidence for E85. The opportunity discussed here is explicitly a flex-fuel performance option, not a gas conversion.

A UK installer exists. The scope matters.

A cheaper litre is not automatically a cheaper mile.

Compare costs for the same distance. If your ethanol setup uses more litres, the lower unit price must first cover that difference. Only the remaining reduction can contribute to installation and other expenses. A performance upgrade may have a worthwhile purpose for an enthusiast without being a sensible household money-saving project.

The calculator below uses UK imperial miles per gallon. Enter your measured petrol economy, not a US MPG figure or an optimistic brochure value. The additional-consumption percentage is an assumption for you and your installer to replace; it is not a promised figure for your vehicle. Include recurring extra costs separately. Treat delivered fuel prices and an installed quote as essential inputs.

Read the result as a decision, not a promise.

For an illustrative 10,000 miles at 40 UK MPG, the petrol requirement is about 1,137 litres. At £1.50 a litre that costs about £1,705 a year. With 25% more litres and E85 at £2.00, the alternative fuel bill is about £2,841. Add £100 of annual extra costs and this example costs roughly £1,237 more each year, before installation.

Those numbers are deliberately editable assumptions, not UK market averages or an Ecotune quote. If your own documented prices produce a saving, compare it with the full installed cost and the years you expect to keep the car. A positive annual figure can still leave the first year negative. Where annual savings are zero or negative, there is no fuel-cost payback.

Get a quote you can actually compare.

Send the installer your model, engine code, year, current modifications and whether the car will be used on public roads. Request a complete description of the proposed work and keep it with the vehicle records. Avoid comparing a bare sensor price with an installed, calibrated package.

• Separate parts, labour, calibration, tax and any necessary supporting work.
• Confirm exactly which fuels and blends the finished setup can use.
• Discuss emissions equipment, road use, warranty and insurer requirements before commissioning work.
• Ask what ongoing inspection or servicing the installation needs.
• Check the fuel supplier’s specification and practical delivery or collection arrangements.
• Calculate with conservative usage assumptions and repeat with higher fuel costs.

Useful for a specialist project; a high bar for everyday savings.

A compatible enthusiast vehicle, an informed specialist and reliable fuel access make this a concrete option to investigate. A newcomer who needs predictable transport costs has a different priority: a car that can be fuelled and maintained conveniently within a known budget. Make the decision from that need rather than from a headline about another country’s fuel prices.

If you cannot establish local supply, a complete quote or your vehicle’s suitability, keep those unanswered questions outside the savings total. A calculator cannot resolve them. Compare the option with continuing to use the manufacturer-specified petrol and improving how you track the existing car’s running costs.
